FAQ

Q: What is Kumon?
A:
Kumon is a supplemental math and reading program for students of all ages and abilities. We believe that all children can reach their full potential with strong skills and guidance. A math teacher in Japan originally developed it for his own children. Today, over 3 million students in 43 countries use the Kumon Method.

Q: What is different about Kumon from other tutoring programs?
A:
The Kumon method and Kumon materials are unique. Most tutoring programs tutor using school materials. Kumon has designed its own curriculum, which covers the cornerstones of the curriculum most needed for high school study.

Q: How would you determine what is best for my child?
A:
Kumon has developed its own placement tests for students enrolling in its programs. The primary purpose is to show us where students will be most comfortable starting in the program. The math tests concentrate on assessing speed and accuracy with basic calculation skills, because a strong foundation in this area is crucial for success with all higher math. The reading tests concentrate on assessing basic reading, reading comprehension, and writing skills, for the same reasons.

Q: Why should I send my child to Kumon?
A:
The Kumon method is a programmed learning curriculum designed to assist students in achieving a mastery of mathematics with an emphasis on accuracy and speed in calculation and reading with speed and accuracy in comprehension. The primary goal is to make the student's success at the high school level easier.

Q: How early can they start?
A:
The curriculum goes from preschool through high school in reading, and preschool through college in math. The placement test determines where in the curriculum they begin their study.

Q: Would my child be required to study every day?
A:
Kumon does require commitment on the part of both parent and child. It is not a short term fix. The system relies on old -fashioned practice. Most parents should allocate 10 to 20 minutes daily per subject for their child. Because each student's progress in the program is individualized, students may start at any level depending on their own ability. The study program encourages and recommends class attendance twice weekly for 30 minutes per subject.

Q: How long is the Kumon Program?
A:
Kumon is a long term program rather than a quick fix. It can take some students approximately six months or more to catch up to their grade level, because we go back to ensure that they have a strong foundation first. We also have a well developed series of challenges for the advanced achiever. The Center is open all year-long, and the most successful students stay enrolled throughout the year to maintain and strengthen the study routine that they first establish when they enrolled in Kumon.
